All about - here and there

The suffix -re- or -ra- means - place or place of..

For instance - nerede? - means - Where? Lit: ne-re-de -   what-place-at
Earlier we learned bu - this - and şu - that - and o - that yonder.

Putting these words together with -ra- meaning place of.. - we form the words:

1. bura - here - Lit: this place
2. şura - there - Lit: that place
3. ora - that yonder - Lit: that place over there

There words are not very often used in this pure form but are extended to show the place - where... - or - from.. - or - to, towards.. - by the addition of a suitable suffix.

The Basic Spatials

Adding the Locative Suffix -de or -da - in, on, at - we form the basic locations:

Some Basic Examples

1. burada - here     Lit: bu-ra-da - this-place-at
2. şurada - there
3. orada - over there
4. nerede? - where?

And the Plurals - Spatially more vague:

1. buralarda - hereabouts, around here
2. şuralarda - thereabouts, around there
3. oralarda - thereabouts over there, around about over there
4. nerelerde? - whereabouts?

Extended Spatials

Similarly if we add a different suffix such as -dan - from - or -a - to, towards - then the meanings become:

The Singular - Spatially less vague:

1. buradan - from here
2. buraya - to here
3. şuradan - from there
4. şuraya - to there
5. oradan - from there
6. oraya - to there
7. nereden? - where from?
8. nereye? - where to?

And the Plurals - again Spatially more vague:

1. buralardan - from hereabouts, from around here
2. buralara - to hereabouts
3. şuralardan - from thereabouts
4. şuralara - to around there
5. oralardan - from thereabouts (distant)
6. oralara - to thereabouts
7. nerelerden? - from whereabouts?
8. nerelere? - to whereabouts?
